Spaghetti Junction, which is about two miles long from end to end, is raised hundreds of feet above the ground on concrete pillars. It was constructed and opened in the early 1970s, along with the section of the M6 to which it is joined. Its main distinction is that most of it is single carriageway, although this is slightly misleading, as there are 7 lanes, of which 6 are in use at any time.
